Green Rocky Road

Release date: January 1, 1977

Guy Carawan was a folk musician and musicologist famous for introducing the protest song “We Shall Overcome” to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960. It had been the favorite of Zilphia Horton, who with her husband Myles founded the Highlander Folk School, where Carawan reintroduced the song when he became Highlander’s music director in 1959. Carawan played the banjo and dulcimer and completed more than a dozen documentary recording projects with musicologists like Alan Lomax. “Green Rocky Road” is one of two personal albums he released on June Appal Recordings.
